Staff members provide technical information to various Departments
(Ministry of Industry, Environment, Health, Finance) and public
Institutions on various topics such as combustion of fuel and
refuse derived fuels, antiknocking properties of automotive fuels,
control of stack emissions, etc.. .
Particular attention is devoted to standardization, mainly
focused on the validation of test methods for gaseous and
liquid fuels. SSC coordinates various ongoing activities, e.g.
the round robin test on petroleum products carried out within
the framework of UNICHIM (Standardization association for
chemical industry, member of UNI, the Italian standardization
body) and the round robin tests on automotive fuels and on vehicle
emissions within CUNA (National Unification Commission for the
Automobile) activity. Staff members participate in national committees
and in CEN TC19 working groups. Standardisation meetings are held
regularly at SSC.
Certified Reference Materials (such as coal and coal ash) had
been developed within the SM&T programme (former BCR) of the
European Community with the participation of SSC
