The SSC Thermochemistry Laboratory (created in 1976) is at the moment the only Italian public center which performs experimentation and research concerning runaway reactions and thermal stability of products and mixtures on behalf of a third party. In the last few years more then 1000 reports about thermal stability for different customers have been drafted. Most of the Italian chemical industries are SSC customers, and they consider the Institute a landmark in this field. Thanks to this intense sphere of activity and to the daily contact with the customers and their problems, the SSC researchers have accumulated great experience, and their activity in the field of safety of industrial chemical processes is well known at national and international level. SSC was one of the promoters of the project HarsNet (Thematic Network on Hazard Assessment of Highly Reactive Systems) financed by UE in which more then thirty Corporations, Industries, University and European Research Institutes participated.

Since 2001 a Cooperation Agreement with ISPESL (Istituto Superiore per la Prevenzione e la Sicurezza sul Lavoro) has been operative in the research activity in this field and since 2002 there has also been a Cooperation Agreement with Federchimica about "Management of Technological Risk".
Many courses about runaway reactions have been organized in the past few years with the participation of more than 50 industries. Over these years many works have been presented at national and international meetings and journals.
Recently, the quality system of SSC has been recognised by SINAL (http://www.sinal.en/ita/index.htm), the Italian Laboratory Accreditation Body. Accreditation recognition is given by SINAL to labs meeting requirements of competence and impartiality according to UNI CEI EN 45001.

As an accredited laboratory SSC (Accreditation No. 0173) is a member of the European accreditation scheme set up by the Commission of the European Economic Community in order to promote the free circulation of goods and products within European Union without the need for repeated tests by the authorities of the EU countries. The SSC Thermochemistry and Safety Laboratory, received the credit for the execution of DSC and ARC tests (methods normalized by ASTM E 537-98 and ASTM E 1981-98) for the evaluation of thermal stability of substances and mixtures.
