Flammability and Explosions

The knowledge of flammability characteristics of gases, vapours and dusts is fundamental for the evaluation of fire and explosion hazards. The Laboratory carries out studies and experimentations on gas mixture, vapours and solid substances for determination of flammability characteristics, for example flammability limits for gas and vapours at different temperatures and pressure range up to T= 400°C and up to P=30 bars), maximum explosion pressure (DPmax), medium and maximum rate of pressure increase, explosion indices (KSt, KG).


The Laboratory also carries out: Determinations of chemical/physical properties indicated in the D.M. 3.12.85 related to the Classifications and regulations for the packaging and labelling of dangerous substances Tests concerning the international carriage of dangerous goods according to ADR, IATA, RID and IMDG. Flammability tests on spray and foam in pressured containers according to FEA (European Federation Aerosol) recommendations Analysis of accidents (fire and explosion) Training courses for operators of chemical industries Risk assessment.

The Institute is authorized by Ministry of Health to carry out determinations in conformity with GPL (Good Laboratory Practice) rules according to D.L.190/92. The test for the evaluation of minimum ignition energy (MIE) of dust clouds is accredited by SINAL according to pr EN 13821.
