The laboratory studies the properties and the behavior of civil and industrial fuels.
Fields of investigation:
• Conditions evaluation of combustion, pirolysis and gasification of solid, liquid and gaseous conventional and non-conventional fuels, through tests, studies and researches on laboratory and semi-pilot scale.
• Combustion and flame studies, using different advanced techniques (Infra-Red Thermography, Laser Induced Fluorescence, Rayleigh Thermometry, micro gas cromatography, Foil Reactor pirolysis) combined with the most common techniques for gases, combustion and gasification products analysis.
• Combustion system evaluation and forecast of different fuelbehaviours changing operating conditions, through combustion models, either for thermal fluid dynamic or chemical kinetic terms (using Fluent and DSMOKE as computer codes).

• Performance characteristics definition (in terms of combustion behavior, thermal efficiency, stack emissions) of traditional (natural gas, gasoil, fuel oil) and alternatives (water-gasoil and water-oil emulsion, biodiesel, solid biomass, vegetable oil/fat and their byproducts) fuels and their use in experimental plants.

• Gaseous emissions control from industrial sources with particular attention for manufacturing and using processes of traditional and alternative fuels. The laboratory has been authorized since 1974 (DM Sanità 19.1.74 - G.U. 2.1.74 n. 25) to atmospheric pollutants controls. The determination of the pollutants in the atmosphere and in the flue gases produced by industrial thermal plants are performed, as predicted by the regulations, in loco, at real time, using automatic instruments installed in a mobile laboratory conveniently equipped, or in SSC laboratory to complete the sampling campaign carried out at the plants by qualified operators.

• Air quality monitoring either indoor, tipically working ambient, or outdoor, urban and extra-urban areas, thanks to the mobile laboratory availability.
• Adjustment of original methodology for non-conventional pollutants sample and analysis, like nanoparticulates. The laboratory provides consulting for the application of flue gas abatement systems.
• Index on Relative Accuracy (IRA) control, on continuous emissions analyzers in big plants, in compliance with D.M. of 21st December 1995.
• Environmental models studies for the evaluation of the atmospheric dispersion and soil relapse of pollutant species from a single or multiple industrial sources considering emission and meteo-climatic conditions.

• Consulting for the request of environmental integrated authorization for the industrial plants subjected to the IPPC regulation (Dir. 96/61/CE, Dlvo 59/05).
• Material characterization and chemical processes study.
In particular processes and catalytic converter testing of gas treatment, in laboratory and thermal plant scale. In catalytic reactions studies innovative techniques like infra-red thermography for studying thermal effects in catalytic reactors and the imaging in visible, UV and NIR are employed .
The surface and structural properties of catalytic converters and solid materials are determined with specific physical and chemical adsorption-desorption techniques.
